On this Thanksgiving, I feel deepest gratitude, not for anything else, but for the relationships I have with those close to my heart. Thinking about these precious relationships, I wondered what makes these bonds strong enough to withstand the test of time!
Following five aspects emerged, which I call the “Five Cs” of Compatibility. They are Conduct, Character, Competence, Creed, and Chemistry.
Conduct pertains to the manner in which we treat our family, friends, partner, children, elders, colleagues, and community members. The key consideration for conduct has to do with how generous we are towards others and how we make them feel as they interact with us! Do they feel happy, elevated, uplifted, positive, or sad, dejected, small, scared, anxious, distraught, or are we even concerned about others’ feelings at all.
Character pertains to how ethical are our actions in various situations, whether acting alone or dealing with others. Honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of our character. The key concern here is about upholding ethical standards at the cost of personal gain even if the action falls within legal constraints.
Competence pertains to our ability to get things done in our field of endeavor. The key to competence is the pursuit of excellence in our field of endeavor. Although competence is generally associated with one’s profession, it also includes our hobbies and handling of family affairs.
Creed pertains to the set of principles, and the system of values and beliefs that guide our life. It is most often associated with the religious faith, however, it also encompasses the moral code that guides our behavior.
Finally, Chemistry is the mysterious bond we feel towards each other that is beyond rational explanation. This attraction happens at the subconscious level and the absence of it trumps any other reason for compatibility.
I am grateful for the relationships based on love and mutual respect with my family, friends, colleagues and community.
Happy Thanksgiving!
